Fall 2026 NAATPl Event: Translation Exercises in Teaching Polish as a Foreign Language

Translation exercises are among the most common language-learning activities, particularly at advanced levels. While they are often associated with practicing grammatical structures, translation tasks can also help develop a wide range of linguistic and communicative skills. In this event, we will explore the role and value of translation in the Polish language classroom.

In the first event of the Fall 2026 semester, Dr. Łukasz Siciński of Indiana University will lead a discussion on translation in the teaching of Polish as a foreign language (PFL). The event will provide an opportunity to examine and share effective classroom practices while reconsidering translation as a valuable pedagogical tool. As is customary, the working languages of the event will be Polish and English.

About the speaker: Dr. Łukasz Siciński is a senior lecturer in the Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at Indiana University Bloomington. He received his PhD from the University of Toronto where he studied Polish and Czech literatures. He teaches Polish language, literature, and film. His current research interests include 20th-century Polish literature, philosophy of language, postwar Polish cinema, and contemporary Czech cinema.
