Traditionally, textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language (PFL) have been written to promote standard-language knowledge and vocabulary. But what happens when PFL students arrive in the classroom with language skills in nonstandard or regional varieties, such as Kashubian (kaszëbsczi jãzëk), Podhalian, or Silesian (ślůnski)?
In the first Spring 2025 event, we will hear from PFL practitioners in North America with experience working with students who bring their nonstandard or regional varieties into the classroom. While challenging the normative expectations of language textbooks, these varieties also present an opportunity to cultivate a more holistic picture of Poland as a country and a language community.
The goal of this event is to shed more light on how the presence of nonstandard and regional varieties in the Polish language classroom can influence teaching approaches, curriculum design, and related areas, as well as to share strategies for effectively utilizing a linguistically diverse student body in the classroom.
The event will feature short presentations followed by an open discussion. In February, the Zoom link to the event will be distributed to all active NAATPl members. If are not a current member, please make sure to join us using this form to access the event. Traditionally, the working languages of the event will be Polish and English.
